How to Match Your Wall Color to Your Furniture

Have you kept your walls white or beige for fear of clashing with your furniture? Coordinating wall color with furniture isn’t as daunting as it seems. All you need to do is take account of a few things before choosing the color.

1. What is the natural lighting like? A room with small windows can feel brighter with light wall colors whereas rooms hit by a lot of sunlight can be painted more dramatic colors without making the room feel dark.

2. How big is the room? Paint small spaces bright, light colors to make them feel more spacious. Dark colors will make the room feel like it’s shrunk. Save the bold, dark colors for large rooms.

Now it’s time to consider the furniture. If you have really colorful furniture, you might want to consider neutral colored walls, an accent wall or painting the molding. Neutral colored walls still add character to the room without overpowering the already existing colors.

If you’re dying for a lime green wall to go with your cherry-red couch, an accent wall paired with gray walls will do the trick (and no, we could not find a picture of such a glorious color combination). Crown molding is another great way to break up a bold color so it doesn’t seem like Jackson Pollack paid a visit.

If you have natural or neutral colored furniture, than consider the reverse: bright colors will do wonders to liven up the space.

Once you’ve taken stock of the lighting, space and pre-existing colors you’re working with, it’s time to consider what sort of color scheme you want. Check out our in-depth post on Basic Color Theory in order to figure out the best way to create mood and coordinate colors.

That’s it. Finding paint to match your furniture is really that easy!
