Color trends are constantly shifting as current events, the economy, celebrities, fads, and fashion morph from one preference to the next. Analysts are anticipating people renovating their homes more than ever due to the current real estate climate and the difficulty to sell houses. The home decor color trends of 2011 were grey, Honeysuckle, and splashes of bright color. While grey is still a major player for 2012, trendsetters have new ways to play with color in your home.
Stephan Saint-Orang, the designer from TLC’s While You Were Out, points to paint and lighting as the two dynamic, affordable home decor trends for 2012.
The biggest color trend this year are neutral colors as shown in this interview with interior designer Jewell Blair on Sonoran Living. Neutral colors are a great way to break away from the traditional beige, taupe, white, and grey without the complications of coordinating with more intense shades of red, blue, etc. You can update the look of your house without worrying about reupholstering all your furniture.
Also, people are looking to color patterns that occur in nature for inspiration. Sherwin William’s Color-Mix forecast for 2012 has the byline “survey the landscape and discover core palettes inspired by Mother Earth. ” You can find surprising color combinations that are vibrant, dynamic, and harmonize with one another by looking at photos of plants or taking a nature walk.
I never realized it had gone out of vogue, but the experts are claiming that African, Asian, and Middle Eastern aesthetic influences are all the rage for 2012 (if that’s the case, does that mean I’m prolific in my decor because I’m ahead of the trend?). Sherwin Williams, for example, has their Restless Nomad color palate with neutral color shades of purple and yellow, along with vibrant red and pink.
Pantone Color Institute has announced Tangerine Tango as the color of 2012. In his article “Tangerine Named the Color of 2012″, Christopher Muther includes this quote from Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute:
We’re all drawn to sunshine, we’re all cheered by its warmth. And orange really does feel like sunshine. It’s also something that uplifts people’s moods. And when we think about the economy, which is the gray elephant in the room, there’s a need for uplifting.
