Meet The Bear, DE Painting Operations Team
In 2016, after 20 years of military service and 20 years of managing other people’s home service companies, Curtis took the plunge and opened Five Star Painting of New Castle and Bear. The goal has been to provide excellent customer service and exceptional painting service to the residential and commercial property owners in Southern New Castle and Northern Kent Counties with a focus on craftmanship, attention to detail and outstanding communication.
Curtis is originally from Brundidge, Alabama (War Eagle) but in 1975 joined the U.S. Coast Guard out of High School. Serving for over 20 years as a Boatswain’s Mate has given Curtis a wealth of knowledge in a wide array of topics, systems and processes and having lived all over the United States, he appreciates the complexity and diversity of the people around him. This gives Curtis a unique perspective and opportunity to respectfully communicate in ways that others find challenging.
Curtis moved to Delaware in 1992, transferred by the Coast Guard, and has lived in Newark and Bear ever since. He has an Associate’s Degree in Technical Management from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management from Wilmington University. Curtis has been happily married to the love of his life, Sharon for 41 years. He has 3 grown children, Erich (currently serving in the U.S. Navy) Daniel and Jaime. They have given him and Sharon 7 beautiful grandchildren.
Curtis is a self-described “workaholic” and never stops learning or asking questions. He enjoys time spent with family, especially the grandchildren, a good movie, and when he has time, the occasional home project. If you call Curtis, he usually answers in a couple of rings, if not you can be sure he will call back as soon as he can, so leave a message!
Curtis was recently asked, what is the biggest challenge your customers face when hiring a painting company or contractor?
I hear it all the time:
I called this guy, this painter, this company but they never called me back!
I called a company, they called me back, made an appointment but never showed up!
I called a company, they scheduled and appointment, came and talked to me but never gave me an estimate for the job, they will not return my calls?
I scheduled work with a company, gave them a deposit and they never came back!
I had work done, it was terrible, I asked them to fix it and they said nothing was wrong with it!
I had work done, I paid when they finished, after they left, I found some problems and now they won’t return my calls!
Finding a company who is responsible, who genuinely cares about you and your project. Finding someone who communicates properly and stands behind their work, who is licensed and insured with a workmanship warranty and a guaranteed promise of satisfaction, that is the biggest challenge!
Sales Estimator/Project Manager
Michael recently joined Five Star Painting of New Castle and Bear in January 2021. Originally from Philadelphia, he moved to Delaware in the late 1980’s, and has lived in Newark, Bear and now resides in Townsend. He brings a background in Home Remodeling and Design with him. Michael previously worked as a Design Consultant for multiple local flooring and remodeling companies and then in 2015 started his own company, Flooring for Life and More, traveling around the United States as a Flooring and Remodeling project Consultant.
Michael graduated from Christiana High School and went on to pursue an Arts of Science Degree in Multimedia Production Design. He launched his own Multimedia Design and Production company in 2006, working in all phases of design, including Videography, Photography, Motion Graphics/Animation while conducting Sales, Production/with direction in digital editing and engineering.
As a Sales Consultant/Estimator for Five Star Painting of New Castle and Bear his primary responsibility is to help homeowners and property managers maintain and enhance the beauty of their property. He does this by actively listening to their wants, needs and desires. He then will offer the right solution, using the proper preparation and products to solve the problems, fix the issues and enhance the look of whatever project is presented. Michael has a keen eye for color and coordination, which makes him an asset to any project where color consultation is required or desired. Michael said part of the reason he went into Multimedia Design was the desire to learn about colors, shapes, sizes and how they affect the project, little did he know at the time that his training and education would take him into home design, remodeling, and painting.
One of Michaels biggest strengths is the passion he brings, his attention to detail and follow-through. Michael is always ready to respond to any question or concern, so do not hesitate to “pick his brain” about your next project or color question.
In his free time, Michael enjoys working on his video production and design projects, he is an avid painter, enjoys art of all kinds. He is a sportsman and an athlete and likes to stay fit by exercising and running as well as a little Martial Arts.
Michael was recently asked, what he likes best about design and the use of color in projects?
Michael responded that he genuinely enjoys the look a customer gets when the project is complete, the parts are put in place and the textures and colors all work in a way to enhance the look and feel of the space in and around their home. He likes that he can bring a customer’s vision to life, transforming an interior room or an exterior aspect of their house into something different that makes it their home.
