Paint Primers for Home Exteriors

A Primer on Exterior Paint Primers

Good primer is critical to achieving a beautiful, even paint job. Primer is designed to properly adhere to and seal surfaces, preventing paint from peeling. Unlike paint, primer is specifically designed for application on bare substrates, such as stucco, wood, metal, and Masonite.

Primer is usually white, however, you can often add tint in a color that matches the top coat. This will result in a better overall color application. Multiple coats of primer may be necessary when applying a drastic color change, such as dark to light, light to dark, solid covering stripes, and so on. Shiny paint that is in good condition will still need to be primed.

Surfaces that are optimal for painting possess the same four qualities:

  • Clean
  • Dull
  • Dry
  • Primed

How to Choose a Primer

If you think about the elements your exterior siding faces in a given month, you know your exterior paint is put to the test.

One of the advantages of repainting a home or other building's exterior is the opportunity to make your exterior paint last longer.

This can be accomplished by using a quality primer. A good acrylic primer used on clean, dry walls prior to paint can greatly extend the life of your paint. Most people find success with a 100% acrylic primer. Protect Painters uses high quality materials to paint your home and will select the supplies necessary for the project. If you have a brand that you prefer, be sure to share that with your professional exterior painting contractor from ProTect Painters.
