Crown Molding Type

Description

Where to Install

Plaster

Plaster is often used for grand interiors and can be cast into intricate profiles. It is made of heavy material and can be easily cracked. It’s also on the more expensive side.

Indoors

Wood

Solid wood can bring warmth to any room. It is usually mounted with a wood adhesive, screws, and finishing nails.

Indoors

Medium density fiberboard (MDF)

MDF is cheaper than wood. It can only be used indoors because it is very susceptible to moisture and heat. A wood adhesive, finishing nails, and putty are needed for installation.

Indoors

Polyurethane

This trim gives you the look of plaster molding at a cheaper price. It’s resistant to moisture, pests, and rot. Finishing nails and a molding-and-paneling adhesive are required for proper placement.

Indoors or outdoors

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

PVC works well in moist places like bathrooms or on exterior walls because it won’t rot. The process of mounting it is similar to polyurethane but requires stainless steel screws with finish heads.

Indoors or outdoors

Flex

This trim is made of pliable material so you can bend it around curved walls. It’s also very durable, making it perfect for either the inside or outside of your home. It can be fitted with generic construction adhesive.

Indoors or outdoors

Polystyrene

This type is the lightest of any crown molding material. It’s mounted with generic construction adhesive, nails, or both. Look out for any thin edges, as they are fragile and can crumble.

FAQs about Crown Molding Installation

What is the purpose of crown molding?

Crown molding is a decorative trim that can be applied to the edges of roofs, windows, cabinets, fireplaces, and more. It is often mounted where the wall meets the ceiling.

Where should you not put crown molding?

Crown molding is not suited for rooms with curved walls or rounded ceilings. This trim needs a specific start and end point, usually going around the perimeter of a room. If your space or hall ends by connecting to another area with varying ceiling height, there may not be a good way to mount crown molding.

Can you put crown molding in every room?

Crown molding is a great way to add flavor and elegance to both indoors and out. Keeping in mind that it won’t work well in areas with curved walls or rounded ceilings, you could use it in any room type.
