What Is Limewashing?
Limewash exterior brick paint is very similar to traditional exterior paint. However, there are several key differences in their formulas and applications. Just like paint, limewash is applied to home exteriors as a protective and stylish coat. While it's most common on brick surfaces, it makes a great barrier on a whole slew of different materials. In contrast to ordinary exterior paint, limewash is made from water and slaked lime, which creates a spectrum of natural colors and plenty of benefits paint can't offer. Our team will help you decide whether limewash or exterior paint is best for your home.
How You Can Benefit From Limewash Exterior Paint
Limewash and exterior paint are two sides of the same coin, which means it can be difficult to choose between the two. There are numerous reasons why you might opt for limewash over paint, from aesthetics to the amount of maintenance. Here are just a few benefits of limewashing:
-
Style: Limewashing a brick exterior brings an aesthetic that typical paints just can't match. The chalky texture allows the brick's natural beauty to shine through while covering up imperfections.
-
Antifungal Properties: Limewash boasts high alkalinity, which sterilizes the brick and discourages mold and fungus growth. What's more, limewash creates a poor environment for pests.
-
Breathability: Limewash is known to be a very breathable coating that allows moisture to evaporate off the surface. This is especially important during those humid Georgia summers!
-
Easy Maintenance: Say goodbye to frequent maintenance! Limewashed exteriors are less likely to crack or chip for weather-related reasons and will rarely need touch-ups.
-
Eco-Friendly: Is being environmentally friendly one of your priorities? Then limewash is calling your name! This coating uses natural clays, minerals, and organic pigments rather than synthetic chemicals found in most paints.
Can All Parts of My Home Be Limewashed?
Good news! Limewash can be applied to all kinds of exterior surfaces. While brick is the most common material for limewashing, it certainly isn't the only one. Any porous exterior, like those made from stone, plaster, stucco, or cement, makes a great complement for limewash. Some homeowners attempt to use limewash on wood or drywall, but the coating may not adhere as well. If you're not sure whether limewash is the best choice for your home, don't hesitate to discuss your needs with our seasoned professionals.
Get Years of Use Out of Limewash
Most experts say that a good coat of limewash will last between five and seven years. However, how long you wait between applications depends on your unique needs. If you want to maintain a more modern look, you may request limewashing every few years. But if you're hoping to increase the rustic vibe of your home's exterior, you can probably wait longer than seven years to reapply limewash. Our team would be glad to help you decide how often to apply a new coat.
